Summer School on Human Rights concluding Ceremony

Rome, 10 July 2015. The fourth edition of the Summer School on Human Rights was held from 6 to 10 July 2015 in Rome. The one-week specialized course is organized on a yearly basis by UNICRI and John Cabot University.

Every year, UNICRI and John Cabot University select a specific focus for the Summer School on Human Rights amongst the most debated topics related to the promotion and protection of human rights.

This year, a group of 18 participants coming from 10 countries has been guided in critically examining how the human rights system engages with group rights, individual rights and the right to self determination.

Through a combination of lectures and dynamic exercises, students have become familiar with the legal frameworks related to group rights and individual rights as well as with the dilemmas and debates that originates when envisaging their simultaneous protection. Potential tensions between religious group rights and individual human rights, the rights of indigenous peoples, the right to development and the right to a clean environment have been amongst some of the most critical topics addressed by the course.

The course has been delivered by leading experts and practitioners such as Ms. Yvonne Donders, Professor of International Human Rights and Cultural Diversity and Executive Director of the Center for International Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Amsterdam and Ms. Antonella Cordone, Senior Technical Specialist on Indigenous Peoples and Tribal Issues at the Policy and Technical Advisory Division of the International Fund for Agricultural Development.

On Friday 10 July the closing ceremony of the Summer School on Human Rights concluded with the award of the certificates of attendance to participants by representatives of UNICRI and John Cabot University. The next edition of the Summer School on Human Rights will be organized in July 2016. Updated information on the new course will be available on UNICRI’s website in February 2016.
